The effects of a stroke can be catastrophic, as we shared in our last blog. The brain is complex, with different areas controlling different aspects of our body functions, so the area of the brain affected by the stroke will determine what after-effects are experienced. Although each individual experiences unique complications from a stroke, the American Stroke Association shares the following effects that may occur:
A stroke in the right half of the brain can cause:
- Left-side of the body paralysis.
- Problems with vision.
- Quick, inquisitive behaviors.
- Loss of memory.
A stroke in the left half of the brain can cause:
- Right-side of the body paralysis.
- Problems with speech and language.
- Slow, careful behaviors.
- Loss of memory.
A stroke affecting the brain stem can cause:
- Effects on both sides of the body.
- Inability to speak.
- Inability to move below the neck.
